PODCAST – Nerding Out With Luyanda Lewis-Nyawo

On this slightly-lighter-than-usual episode, our hosts Flint and Ashleigh talk through:

  • A new direct care clinic for the trans community will open in New York City, but is it all that was promised by mayor Zohran Mamdani?
  • A quick run through of some developments around the EHRC, including some serious questioning by the Women & Equalities Committee.
  • The sterling work done by the local government committee within UNISON.
  • Stories of snowflakes upset that people disagree with them, in Loser’s Corner!
  • And a nice chill one in our meat this time, with a nice long chat with nonbinary actor Luyanda Lewis-Nyawo, as featured in Baldur’s Gate III, Wednesday and most recently, the new Russell T. Davies drama, Tip Toe.

Common sense supercut

Q13 Common Sense approach

Q14 Common Sense approach

https://parliamentlive.tv/event/index/c00076ad-5efd-47c1-97e0-fe6cfd16a4df?in=14:54:38

Q15 That will be dealt with in a common sense and practical way

https://parliamentlive.tv/event/index/c00076ad-5efd-47c1-97e0-fe6cfd16a4df?in=14:56:10

Q17 In terms of common sense stepping in

https://parliamentlive.tv/event/index/c00076ad-5efd-47c1-97e0-fe6cfd16a4df?in=14:57:41

Q17 There are common sense situations where people will say you’re in the wrong room

https://parliamentlive.tv/event/index/c00076ad-5efd-47c1-97e0-fe6cfd16a4df?in=14:58:20

Q21 On your first point on common sense … maybe common sense is the wrong term https://parliamentlive.tv/event/index/c00076ad-5efd-47c1-97e0-fe6cfd16a4df?in=15:04:29

Etc

Q75 When it doesn’t work in practice?
If we as the EHRC found ourselves being repeatedly presented with situations where the law is clearly being broken, then we would have to think about … enforcement

Q23 What if the code breached article 8?

If we had thought that where the law was or indeed anything in our interpretation was not consistent with Article 8 rights, then we would have been obliged to say so, and we would have said so.

Q56 … is there an obligation to provide a third space for trans people?

there are many reasons somebody might use unisex toilets or other unisex provisions. I do not think that is automatically outing somebody.
